Institute of Bioengineering and Agroecology

As part of an extended period of strategic investment in the sciences and in acknowledgement of the successes in key areas, the University has established a Research Institute of Bioengineering and Agroecology. Construction of a dedicated research building in the biosciences was funded through £9million public and private support under the Irish Higher Education Authority Programme for Research in Third-level Institutions.

The Institute of Bioengineering and Agroecology (IBA) will build on a pre-existing consortium of six academic laboratories at NUI Maynooth. Its overall concern is the benign manipulation of organisms for field use, in pursuit of food security, human health, environmental enhancement, and novel materials.

The IBA conducts research in the following areas:

  • Genetics, development, behaviour and ecology of biological control organisms, especially Heterorhabditis and its symbiont bacterium Photorhabus.
  • Developmental biology, stress physiology and genetic modification of plants, including plastid transformation.
  • Ecological management of genes inserted in plants or biocontrol organisms.
